While I was roaming around ARTBOOK in Los Angeles, I come upon a fantastic book by a photographer I have never heard of before。 Gerard Petrus Fieret was a Dutch poet and photographer who managed to live on the outskirts of the European art world。 In style, he reminds me a bit of the eccentric photographer Miroslav Tichý, in that he seems to be an outsider, and has a very deep interest in woman's bodies。 The other common thing is that they both shoot in black and white, and their work is almost s While I was roaming around ARTBOOK in Los Angeles, I come upon a fantastic book by a photographer I have never heard of before。 Gerard Petrus Fieret was a Dutch poet and photographer who managed to live on the outskirts of the European art world。 In style, he reminds me a bit of the eccentric photographer Miroslav Tichý, in that he seems to be an outsider, and has a very deep interest in woman's bodies。 The other common thing is that they both shoot in black and white, and their work is almost sculpturesque in how they photograph their models (Tichý does so in private, but that's another subject matter) as well as the framing of the image。 Both captures the image of their cities, but in a very specific and narrow manner。 The same can be said for their sense of Eros as well。 The book "Gerard Petrus Fieret" comes in a slip-case, and the book itself is quality paperback。 The paper used for the book is thick newspaper print。 Each black and white image is printed on the right side of the book。 There is a delicate touch to the book, but in actuality, it's very sturdy, like the photographs themselves。 My first thought while looking at this book is that he has great taste in beautiful looking woman。 He captures not only their natural attractedness but also their character。 On his side of the camera, he captures what he feels is sexy, but there is clearly intelligence and a strong sense of being with his models。 I read the text in the book, and a lot of the females are art models for drawing classes - so there is a sense of comfort for them to be in front of the camera or his gaze。 A lot of the photographs in the book are stamped with a "Copyright Gerrit Petrus Fieret P。O。 Box 117 - Den Haag Holland。" At first, I thought maybe these are images that he sent out to magazines and is trying to protect himself。 Reading the text, I discovered that Fieret was very paranoid regarding other photographers stealing his photographs or his ideas。 There is a manic quality to his work that is hard for me to put my finger on it - for instance, where does that energy come from? That, I don't have an answer to。 Still, his work is to provoke as well as a fascinating document of his (what seems) a small world。 His street photography is superb。 Poetic mixed with a sense of erotic insight, even from everyday objects found on the street。 They're expressionistic works in some degree。 Gerard Petrus Fieret is a superb photographer, artist, and this book is a must-have for anyone who has an interest in post-war European aesthetics。 。。。more
